Ulfric Stormcloak would say that I owe my allegiance to the Nord people as they fight for Skyrim's independence. Perhaps this is also true.

The day might come when I am forced to draw my sword for one side or the other. But that day has not come yet. And also because he knew he could.

Even now, my court wizard, Farengar, continues his research into ways we might drive back these We must also have ample reserves of water to combat the fires that will surely spread after an attack.

But our greatest weapon? For if we cannot kill the beast, we must at least have the tenacity to drive it back. Until brave heroes step forward to destroy these monsters, that is the best we can do.

Alvor Or "Gerdur" if Ralof is followed instead of Hadvar. The smith, isn't he? Reliable, solid fellow. Not prone to flights of fancy And you're sure Helgen was destroyed by a dragon?

This wasn't some Stormcloak raid gone wrong? Or "Gerdur? Owns the lumber mill, if I'm not mistaken. Pillar of the community. I had a great view while the Imperials were trying to cut off my head.

You're certainly But it's none of my concern who the Imperials want to execute. Especially now.

What I want to know is what exactly happened at Helgen. I saw the dragon burn Helgen to the ground. About the dragon attack. Then the dragon attacked.

And last I saw it was heading this way. Was the dragon there? But there must be more to it than that.

What do you know about the Dragonborn? The Greybeards really were summoning you. They live in seclusion high on the slopes of the Throat of the World.

If you really are Dragonborn, they can teach you how to use your gift. The Greybeards seem to think the same thing. It was a mighty deed.

You've earned a place of honor among the heroes of Whiterun. Did something Wulfharth was Dragonborn. Talos, too - the founder of the Empire, back in the good old days.

In the very oldest tales, back from when there still were dragons in Skyrim, the Dragonborn would slay dragons and steal their power.

They live up on top of the Throat of the World. If you're really Dragonborn, they'll want to talk to you. In the old stories, they always summon the Dragonborn for training.

But only the Greybeards study the Way of the Voice any more. If you can Shout I need to trap a dragon in your palace. I thought you asked me to help you trap a dragon in my palace.

Persuade "I'm sorry, but I can't do it. We'll just have to keep fighting the dragons as best we can.

You want me to let a dragon into the heart of my city, with the threat of war on my doorstep? The risk is too great.

Alduin has returned. The World-Eater himself? Doesn't his return mean it's the end times? Now, what's this nonsense about trapping a dragon in my palace?

And I will. But I need your help first. Ulfric and General Tullius are both just waiting for me to make a wrong move.

Do you think they will sit idle while a dragon is slaughtering my men and burning my city? No, I can't risk weakening the city while we are under threat of enemy attack.

I'm sorry. But getting both sides to agree to a truce will be difficult at this point. The bitterness has gone too deep. They are respected by all Nords.

High Hrothgar is neutral territory. If the Greybeards were willing to host a peace council I'll talk to Arngeir about hosting a peace council.

Maybe you can stop the dragons - and this war into the bargain. It's my destiny to stop him. That's good enough for me. Although I never thought to put the tale to the test.

They say he Shouted it into submission in single combat atop Mount Anthor and brought it back to Whiterun. Numinex was the dragon's name.

That's his skull decorating the main hall. It's the only way to stop the dragons. Just say the word. The great chains are oiled.

We wait on your word. I'll be famouser than Olaf One-Eye! Let's go trap a dragon. Make sure you do your part.

I'm putting my city in your hands. The General wants to lend Legion troops. Give the papers to my Steward. For the Jarl's eyes only.

Proventus is my eyes. Just give me the letter. I presume once I have it, I can do as I please with it? Give the man my axe. If he returns it to you it means we have business to settle.

If he keeps it, then we are at peace. There are but a few simple truths behind one warrior giving another his axe.

Ulfric will know my meaning. Keep your wits about you and you won't be harmed. And then get back here. Because if Ulfric isn't bluffing, I'll need every able body to defend Whiterun.

Any fool can see that. For centuries, we have benefited from the Empire's protection, and prosperous trade with the south. In exchange, the people of Cyrodiil sleep peacefully, knowing their northern border is guarded by the fiercest warriors in all Tamriel.

Do you think Ulfric really cares about Skyrim's independence, or the welfare or its people? I promise you, he doesn't. He's nothing more than a barbarian renegade, whose lust for power has cost the lives of countless innocents.

I have no more taste for Thalmor wine than I do for Thalmor company. What is more, I'm away from the hold at a time when there are dragons and Stormcloaks on the loose.

There's every chance I'll return to find a pile of smoking ash where Whiterun once stood. That woman and her Thalmor Justiciars have caused nothing but problems for the people of Skyrim.

Get everyone's attention for a few minutes. I was wondering what you were doing here I'm glad to play my part. He's a dark child. I don't know what to do with him.

He was always a quiet lad, but lately He's become brooding. He won't say a word to me, but I don't know how I upset him. If you could speak to him.

Draw out the truth. I would be immensely grateful. Categories :. Cancel Save. Universal Conquest Wiki. In Dragonsreach : " Well. After Balgruuf converses with his council: "There's no time to stand on ceremony, my friend.

In Dragonsreach : "It pleases me to see you again. In Dragonsreach : "May the gods watch over your battles, friend. He simply walked up to the boy and murdered him!

If Ulfric wants to challenge my rule in the Old Way, let him. Though, I suspect he'll prefer to send his "Stormcloaks" to do it for him. He's already proven his personal strength.

Now he seeks to prove his army's. I mean, if you are bent on offending Jarl Ulfric But, Proventus has a point. Ulfric has made it clear; in his mind, to refuse his claim is to side with the Empire.

That was different. Was I given a chance to object to the terms of the treaty? The Jarls weren't asked. We were told. And we had to like it. This isn't about gold!

Let us see if Ulfric is serious. But so am I. I'm sending you to Windhelm. You can return this axe to our friend.

The esteemed Jarl of Windhelm has my answer. Make sure he gets it. You can return this axe to our friend; the esteemed Jarl of Windhelm has my answer.

I have a message for you to deliver to our friend, the esteemed Jarl of Windhelm. Deliver this axe to Ulfric Stormcloak.

Balgruuf: "Proventus. Bring me my pen. And the good parchment. I need to make a few things clear before I accept these Legionnaires of his.

Ulfric means war. I knew that would be his response. As soon as you left I sent word to General Tullius, who's been kind enough to lend us some of his troops and Legate Cipius here.

Let Ulfric try to make it past our combined forces. I'll turn you back over to your Legion. Legate Cipius will have use for you.

Gods be with us all. Where are your children? I hope Vignar doesn't find them. He'll ask a king's ransom, I'm sure.

The Thalmor are reminding us that we're at their beck and call. Proventus: "My lord. You have to listen. I only counsel caution. We cannot afford to act rashly in times like these.

If the news from Helgen is true This is no time for rash action. I just think we need more information before we act.

I just Shall we continue to trust in the strength of our walls? Against a dragon? It's in the most immediate danger, if that dragon is lurking in the mountains He'll assume we're preparing to join Ulfric's side and attack him.

Irileth, send a detachment to Riverwood at once. Proventus: "Good. You're finally here. The Jarl's been waiting for you.

What else could it mean? The Greybeards My brother needs a word with you. This hasn't happened in Not since Tiber Septim himself was summoned when he was still Talos of Atmora!

What does any of this Nord nonsense have to do with our friend here? Capable as he Or "she" may be, I don't see any signs of him Or "her" being this, what, "Dragonborn.

Why you puffed-up ignorant Don't be so hard on Avenicci. It's just that Whatever happened when you referring to the Dragonborn killed that dragon, it revealed something in you, and the Greybeards heard it.

If they think you're Dragonborn, who are we to argue? You'd better get up to High Hrothgar immediately. There's no refusing the summons of the Greybeards, it's a tremendous honor.

I envy you, you know. To climb the 7, Steps again I made the pilgrimage once, did you know that?

High Hrothgar is a very peaceful place. I wonder that the Greybeards even notice what's going on down here.

They haven't seemed to care before. No matter. Go to High Hrothgar. Learn what the Greybeards can teach you.

We still have a city to defend. Irileth: "Halt! In the name of the Jarl, Balgruuf the Greater. That's enough. I surrender I surrender. Everyone stand down.

That's an order. Stand down! Your family was noticeably absent from the walls. Now I know why. Wouldn't a dagger in the back have sufficed?

The Empire has no place in Skyrim And you? You have no place in Whiterun anymore. But mark my words, old man, in the days to come, Ulfric will spread his rebellion thin.

And what then? We need the Empire, as much as it needs us. We Nords are the Empire! Our blood built it. Our blood sustains it! You of all people should know that.

You wish to see an Empire without Talos? Without its soul? We should be fighting those witch-elves, not bending knee to them. The Emperor is nothing more than a puppet of the Thalmor.

Skyrim needs a High King who will fight for her, and Whiterun needs a Jarl who will do the same. Was all this worth it?

How many of those corpses lining our streets wear the faces of men who once called you friend? What about their families? Both of you! There is a burning city out there that needs a government.

Galmar, come, let us restore order. You hear me you old fool! This isn't over! Because if Ulfric isn't bluffing, I'll need every able body to defend Whiterun.

Balgruuf : "Proventus. Bring me my pen. And the good parchment. I need to make a few things clear before I accept these Legionnaires of his.

When you return with his axe, he'll say, "You've returned with my axe. I knew that would be his response. As soon as you left I sent word to General Tullius, who's been kind enough to lend us some of his troops and Legate Cipius here.

Gods be with us all. Imperial Soldier : "Sir! I have If we can hold them there Where'd they get catapults?

The city walls are already falling apart as it is. It's the Imperial milk drinkers I'm worried about. Of course not. Just - don't let me down Cipius.

We'll need to set up water brigades to combat the flames. How long until they arrive? They're hiding in the country side. What's he waiting for?

They'll be at the gates at any moment! Time to see what these Stormcloaks are made of. Move it soldier. Spread the word. Every miserable last one of them.

The quest, Battle for Whiterun will now start. They already sing of your valor and skill! The halls of Sovngarde are no doubt ringing with your praises!

In defeating these Stormcloak traitors, you have proven the hollowness of their cause and the fullness of your hearts. The citizens of Whiterun are forever in your debt!

But Ulfric will not stop here. No, he will continue to strike out against any true Nord who remains faithful to the Empire.

He will continue to sow discord and chaos wherever he can. And so, we must each one of us, continue to fight this insurrection, lest our fallen brothers have died for naught!

Lest our honor be lessened should we allow these bloodthirsty beasts to prowl our lands! Carry on men, my gratitude and blessings go with you!

For Whiterun! For the Empire! When you talk to him again, he'll say, "Thank you for your role in all of this. It'd be my honor should you decide to make Whiterun your home.

Speak with Proventus. He'll make the necessary arrangements. Why side with the Empire? Any fool can see that. For centuries, we have benefited from the Empire's protection, and prosperous trade with the south.

The man is persistent, I'll give him that. I suppose it's time I gave him an answer I mean it's time to challenge Ulfric to face me as a man, or march his Stormcloaks up to the gates.

A dagger in the back is all you could expect! Once the battle starts, he'll then put on a full set of steel plate armor minus the helm. When you invade Dragonsreach, he'll yell, "I'll be damned if I let this rabble take my city without raising my own sword.

That's enough. I surrender I surrender. Everyone stand down. That's an order. Stand down! Vignar : "Balgruuf! Your family was noticeably absent from the walls.

You hear me you old fool! This isn't over! A Stormcloak? I'd thought better of you. You'll all come to regret this day.

If you talk to him after the following conversation, he'll only say, "I surrender! Give me a few hours to gather my household, and I'll depart.

You have my word. If you sneak into the Jarl's Quarters and open one of the doors, you can see Jarl Balgruuf gathering his things, his children are there, as well as the rest of the people who support him.

Balgruuf will now spend his entire life in the basement of the Blue Palace , either sitting around or sleeping. When you approach him, he'll say, "After Whiterun is retaken, Ulfric will pay in blood for his insolence.

I hope Vignar doesn't find them. He'll ask a king's ransom, I'm sure. Hrongar : "Have you reconsidered my idea?

I won't leave Whiterun defenseless, even for a day. The Companions can help protect the city, and the Emperor will be in our debt.

We are short on guards as it is! If we lose half our men, the Dark Brotherhood and Thieves' Guild will have the run of the city.

The Stormcloaks will be the least of our worries! The answer is no, I tell you! Now stop pestering me with your war-mongering!

Irileth : "Balgruuf, did you slip out again last night for a drink at the Bannered Mare? Yes, I went out for a pint or two.

What of it? You should have told me first. I won't apologize for talking to my people. You can't protect me every moment of the day.

Proventus : "My lord, our provisions are running dangerously low. Our stores of meat, wine and grain are all but depleted. That's your job as Steward, isn't it?

Why do you trouble me with these details? I'll need more coin if I'm to provision us properly. I can scarcely afford to pay the guards, and we need every one of them in these troubled times.

Numinex was the dragon's name. That's his skull decorating the main hall. You have a truce to arrange first, eh? When the truce negotiations are about to start, he'll take his seat between General Tullius and Elenwen.

Before the negotiations get underway, he'll say, "If you can arrange an end to the fighting, Dragonsreach is at your disposal. When Ulfric complains about Elenwen's presence, he'll say, "Diplomatic as usual.

Elisif : "Wait. General, you don't intend to just hand over Markarth to that At the end of the negotiations, he'll say one of the following lines, based on the outcome of the treaty, "This is quite an achievement, Dragonborn.

And General Tullius. Riften is ours! I hope it was worth it. Getting Ulfric to agree to anything at all is quite an achievement.

Just say the word, and my men will help you spring this trap. When it's all over, he'll walk all the way back to Whiterun, determined to keep his word, saying, "When I return to Whiterun, I'll get my men ready to help trap this dragon.

After the peace council, or if the Civil War is already over, he'll say, "Then Whiterun will stand with you, Dragonborn. We will take the risk, and gain the glory, whether it be in victory or defeat!

So what's the plan, then? How do you intend to lure a dragon into the trap? I trust you know your business. Probably for the best.

He goes to kill his wife only to be stopped by Farengar, who's probably been noticing that something's wrong with the jarl.

As Balgruuf awakes from his stupor, he sees that clutched in his sweating hands is the Ebony Blade. Farengar and him lock it away.

His wife leaves him. No one dies, but they're all changed forever. To be strictly accurate, we learn that Mephala's told Nelkir he doesn't have the same mother, and apparently this is a secret that Nelkir didn't know previously.

So, we can rule out Nelkir being the child of a second marriage, which would be public. Since it's been kept from Nelkir, presumably Balgruuf's wife took the child as hers.

However, we can't rule out that Mephala was just lying to Nelkir, mixing up truths Dad worships Talos with falsehoods you have a different mother.

The set-up is kind of weird: it wouldn't be strange for a nobleman to have a bastard son in his family, but it's weird that Nelkir wouldn't know otherwise.

I can think of how it could be done privately. For example, if Balgruuf's wife faked a pregnancy once she knew her husband's lover was pregnant, as preparation for accepting the child as their youngest.

However, it could also be an open secret that everyone in Whiterun knows, but has just been kept from young Nelkir's ears, isolated up in Dragonreach.

I mean, that's weird too. Weird doesn't mean it didn't happen, just that it's an abnormal situation that needs explaining.

Yea, from what I've seen, it seems like people often forget to consider that Mephala could have just been lying to Nelkir.

Isn't one of her spheres lies? The question would be why she wanted Balgruuf dead though. Could it have been for the simple fact that he'd been hiding her artifact and so it was losing power?

Or maybe she was in league with someone since after all, there had already been assassination attempts.

Balgruuf and Farengar are essentially trying to outwit Mephala here with secret plots which I can't see ending well, and would just pique her interest in bringing them down.

We know there have been attempts on the Jarl's life. Or perhaps he had a fling, Ned Stark-type situation.

We know he's an honorable man, so I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. So what you're saying is Nelkir is actually a secret Septim and Balgruuf was protecting him from the Medes finding out.

It IS possible that it is something as simple as that and nothing scandalous. There's a skeleton under the bridge leading to Dragonsreach.

I wouldn't be surprised if that were her. Certainly makes you rethink your views on him. Then again, she could've been killed by Nelkir, he seems like the sort who'd do that sort of thing.

Considering that the original version of the quest involved Mephala influencing Balgruuf's children to murder him before that had to be cut, probably because it would break the Civil War and main quest this seems quite possible.

Want that skeleton someone that crossed maven black-briar? I think it's said through papers during thieves guild quest.

The papers suggest Maven had someone killed in Whiterun. The link to the skeleton is fannish speculation.

I think there was very subtle hints throughout the Whiterun experience that Balgruuf and Irileth may have had somewhat of an intimate relationship at one point.

Their relationship is plausible, but if a child was born out of it, the child would be a Dunmer as the children of mixed race couples always take the mother's race.

Who says he has to be married to have kids? He's a jarl, essentially a king. While it might be frowned on he does have 'I do what I want' privileges.

That can extend to having kids out of wedlock and adopting his mistress's kids as his official heirs. It's got some historical precedent in RL, and probably Tamriel too but I can't think of any.

So explanation would be the older kids are from one mistress or maybe even two different ones, who knows and Nelkir is from another one.

There might be too much pressure from multiple suitors suitresses? Balgruuf has kids from mistresses who can have the throne passed to them if something happens, as a precaution.

Balgruuf himself might be stuck in a multi-season run of The Bachelor. It could also be his wife or at least the eldest two's mother s died so long ago and of completely unsuspicious circumstances childbirth, a city-wide sickness, etc that no one feels the need to mention it.

Given that there's no mom, it'd be super easy to have Mephala or someone slip in a line hinting about how it was used on their mom.

We don't know who put the Ebony Blade in the closet, only that Farengar and Balgruuf have the only keys and Mephala need's the LDB's help to get it out.

Farengar could have been the one to put it there for all we know. With the ebony blade? Who would have done that, Nelkir out of jealousy of his half siblings, or maybe even Balgruuf?

It's just wild speculation based on absolutely nothing. And Nelkir is a small child. He's not murdering anyone any time soon, even if Mephala wanted him to.

He's the youngest out of all Balgruuf's children, the oldest being No one said either of his "wives," if he actually had those died.

The only reason Mephala can contact Nelkir in the first place is because the Ebony Blade is already there.

Sure, but the question has no answer until one of the developers decides to lay it plain, which isn't likely.

The developers' opinions don't matter. Their input is as valuable as anyone else's in this case. I think we can assume Balgruuf was married.

Skyrim seems to be following the Imperial cult in the game's era, and that includes the Cult's teachings on marriage and family.

Legitimacy is something people worrry about in this world, and it seems unlikely to me that the Jarl's heir Frothir would be born out of wedlock.

The theory that Mephala is grooming him is fascinating. You say he's not murdering any time "soon" but Daedric Princes have a lot of time on their hands and can play the long game.

Someone asked if a 7 year old used a daikatana to murder a grown woman. That's what I'm responding to. Its actually based on cut content.

Balgruuf was supposed to be murdered by his children due to Mephala and iirc it was supposed to reveal that his wife was killed by Balgruuf with the ebony blade which is why its locked in the basement.

It's so Balgruuf always knew where it was and could prevent it from following into the wrong hands. There's cut content about Balgruuf getting murdered, but there's nothing in the cut content suggesting anything about his wife.

I said a similar thing, just 3 hours after you. I hadn't thought of it till after I read this post. It is mostly speculation, but I'd go on a length and say that Nelkir's mother might be Hulda, based purely on the fact that her guesstimated age would fit, her involvement in the whispering door as the quest-giver, and her owning the tavern- if it's a family business, she might have worked there earlier as a waitress, and you know.

In oblivion there is a Nord couple that mentions they live together but aren't married. I think perhaps this Nord tradition still goes on in parts of skyrim.

Maybe Balgruuf is keeping it old school. Idgrod is married to Aslfur, her steward, and Korir to Thaena, his housecarl. If Sorli becomes Jarl of Hjaalmarch, her husband Pactur becomes steward.

Jarl Laila in Riften also had a husband but he died before the Civil War iirc. There's dialogue I think between her and her housecarl Unmid about visiting his grave without escort which makes Unmid nervous.

I believe her sons make reference to their dad in their dialogue too. It is odd though that Balgruuf's wife is not talked about even in passing.

Only reference we get to her is Nelkir saying he has a different mom. The dead moms in Rorikstead get more mention than Balgruuf's wife. I actually think that Balgruff is in on the sacrifice fertile women to Clavicus Vile thing going on in Rorikstead.

Off topic, but could you link to this so I could read more about it? Rorikstead is an odd place as it is and I haven't heard this before so I am curious.

It's probable balgruff may have killed his wife and mistress with the ebony blade to gain it power, then locked it up, and mehpala then wanted it's power released so she began spinning her own web to nelkir to get that power released.

But the dragonborn came along before that happened. Balgrufs wife is mostly dead by ebony blade which he locked away from everyone.

TBH Balgrufs is my fav character in Skyrim. He us such a nice man and very welcoming. Use of this site constitutes acceptance of our User Agreement and Privacy Policy.
